The Great Depression
“People are just as important as profits”
A turbulent time in Australia’s history the 20’s & 30’s marked a very difficult time for Australians. It was a time of great poverty there has probably never been quite a period in our history where the indelible Australian fighting spirit was more important than ever. This strength was evident in the founder of the King Gee empire – Mr ARH (Bob) Adcock.

In 1926 this young tradesman went into business making and selling workers’ overalls from a tiny rented premises (his home in fact) in Rawson Place, Sydney. Despite the Depression, sales of Adcock’s durable work clothes grew during the thirties. Bob’s business philosophy was unheard of during the Depression and most of his peers thought it was unrealistic. But Bob stuck by his belief that “people are just as important as profits”.
Together with his amazing durable work overalls it became a winning formula for garments, “...we didn’t have any trick or gimmicks…all we had was good people and reliable merchandise at an honest price. That was our formula.” And this simple formula helped make the company a great success.
